What Is a Motion Sensor?

A motion sensor is an electrical device that detects movement within a selected area and sends a signal to control connected equipment. In security lighting, the signal can switch a light on when a person, vehicle, or other moving object enters the detection zone. Common sensor types include passive infrared and microwave devices.

Key Takeaways About Motion Sensor

  • Detection depends on movement within the sensor’s coverage area.
  • A sensor can control lights through compatible wiring and controls.
  • A motion sensor is not the same as a photocell.

How Motion Sensor Works

Motion sensor operation begins when the device monitors changes within its detection area. A passive infrared sensor responds to changes in heat patterns, while a microwave sensor sends and receives electromagnetic signals to identify movement. The sensor then sends a control signal through its connected circuit.

In security lighting, that signal activates a fixture or control device for the setting selected during installation. Coverage depends on the sensor’s position, viewing direction, and surrounding objects. A photocell responds to changes in ambient light, so it may turn a fixture on at dusk without detecting movement. Some security lighting systems use both devices for separate control functions.

From the Service Electric team

When we install or check a motion sensor, we review its mounting position, detection direction, wiring, and connection to the security light. We also test the sensor under normal site conditions, since nearby walls, landscaping, vehicles, and heat sources can affect detection.

Motion Sensor in Practice: A Real-World Example

A homeowner may use a motion sensor to activate an exterior light near a side entrance when someone approaches. Proper positioning helps cover the walkway while reducing unwanted activation from passing traffic or moving branches.
