What Is a Photocell?

Photocell is a light-sensitive electrical control that turns an outdoor lighting circuit on when surrounding light falls and turns it off when daylight returns. A photocell responds to ambient brightness, so landscape lights can follow the natural day and night cycle without manual switching. The device is commonly installed where it can sense open-sky conditions.

Key Takeaways About Photocell

  • A photocell responds to ambient light, not movement.
  • Placement affects whether the control reads daylight accurately.
  • A photocell is not the same as a motion sensor.

How Photocell Works

A hand adjusts a small outdoor device on a wooden table, with tools and a hose nearby

A photocell uses a light-sensitive element to detect changes in ambient brightness. As daylight fades, the control changes the electrical state of the lighting circuit and allows the connected fixtures to operate. When daylight returns, the circuit changes again and the lights switch off.

Landscape lighting performance depends on the photocell sensing the sky rather than a nearby lamp. A fixture aimed toward the sensor can create a false daylight reading and prevent other lights from operating as intended. Technicians check the sensor location, wiring connections, and switching response during installation or troubleshooting. A motion sensor follows movement, while a photocell follows changes in light.

From the Service Electric team

When we work on landscape lighting, we check the photocell location before testing the fixtures. Our team looks for nearby lamps, shaded areas, damaged wiring, and loose connections that can affect the light reading. We also test the switching response under controlled conditions.

Photocell in Practice: A Real-World Example

A homeowner wants pathway and garden lights to operate automatically each evening. A photocell mounted where it can read open daylight activates the landscape lighting after dusk and switches it off after sunrise.
