What Is Conduit?

Conduit is a protective channel that routes and shields electrical wires and cables. It may be made from metal or nonmetallic material and may run through walls, ceilings, floors, or exposed areas. Electricians select conduit based on the wiring location, physical conditions, connection method, and space available for the conductors.

Key Takeaways About Conduit

  • Conduit protects conductors inside a defined wiring path.
  • The material and route depend on the installation environment.
  • Conduit is not the same as the wires inside it.

How Conduit Works

Conduit works as a planned pathway for electrical conductors. Wires enter through fittings and follow the protected route to outlets, switches, panels, or equipment. The pathway keeps conductors organized and helps shield them from contact, impact, moisture, and other site conditions.

Electricians choose a conduit type that fits the installation environment and the wiring method. Metal conduit can provide physical protection and may form part of a grounding path when installed correctly. Nonmetallic conduit can suit locations where corrosion resistance or easier routing is useful. Bends, couplings, boxes, and supports must align so the conductors can be installed without damage.

From the Service Electric team

When we plan Electrical Wiring Installation, we check the route, connection points, conductor space, and surrounding conditions before selecting conduit. We also inspect fittings and transitions so the wiring path remains continuous, accessible, and suited to the structure.

Conduit in Practice: A Real-World Example

A home renovation may need conduit to route wiring from an electrical panel to a detached area or exposed wall device. The electrician selects the pathway and fittings to protect the conductors along that route.
