What Is a Weatherhead?

Weatherhead is a weatherproof service-entrance fitting that covers the point where overhead electrical conductors enter a building. The fitting directs rain away from the service mast and helps protect the conductors and connection area. A Weatherhead usually sits above the roofline and forms part of an overhead electrical service entrance.

Key Takeaways About Weatherhead

  • The fitting sits at the top of an overhead service mast.
  • Its shape helps shed rain away from service conductors.
  • A Weatherhead is not the same as an electrical meter.

How Weatherhead Works

A Weatherhead forms the upper end of an overhead service mast. Service conductors pass through the fitting as they move from the utility connection toward the building's service equipment. The hooded shape helps water run away from the conductor openings instead of entering the mast.

The Weatherhead works with the service entrance and service mast as one pathway. Its position and orientation help maintain a protected entry point above the roof. During an electrical service upgrade, an electrician checks the fitting for damage, secure attachment, and a clear path for the conductors.

From the Service Electric team

When we inspect a Weatherhead, we check its cover, attachment, orientation, and connection to the service mast. We also look for damage that could allow water into the mast or affect the service conductors. During an Electrical Service Upgrade, our team considers the Weatherhead as part of the complete service entrance.

Weatherhead in Practice: A Real-World Example

An older home receiving an Electrical Service Upgrade may have a cracked Weatherhead above the roof. The electrician checks the fitting and replaces it when its condition could expose the service entrance to water.
