What Is a Load Center?
A Load Center is a panel assembly that receives electrical power and distributes it through branch circuits in a building. It houses circuit breakers, a busbar, and connection points for grounded and grounding conductors. The load center gives each circuit overcurrent protection and provides an organized location for switching and servicing electrical circuits.

Key Takeaways About Load Center
- A load center combines circuit distribution with breaker protection.
- The enclosure organizes branch circuit connections for service work.
- A load center is often called an electrical panel.
How Load Center Works

A load center receives power from the service equipment and sends it through individual branch circuits. Circuit breakers connect to the busbar inside the enclosure. Each breaker controls a circuit and opens when that circuit draws more current than the breaker is designed to carry.

The enclosure also provides terminals for neutral and grounding conductors, depending on the installation arrangement. A load center may serve an entire building or operate as a downstream distribution point. A subpanel is a related load center that receives power from another panel. During an upgrade, the panel size, breaker arrangement, conductor connections, and available circuit space all affect the installation work.

From the Service Electric team
When we inspect a load center, we check the enclosure, busbar, breakers, conductor terminations, and labeling. We also trace how the panel connects to the service equipment and review whether the existing arrangement supports the planned electrical panel upgrade.
Load Center in Practice: A Real-World Example
A homeowner adding larger electrical equipment may need an electrical panel upgrade when the existing load center has limited circuit space or cannot support the planned arrangement. The work may include replacing the enclosure, moving circuit connections, and checking each breaker and conductor.
