What Is a Generator Inlet?

A generator inlet is a fixed connection point that transfers electricity from a portable generator to a building’s transfer switch. The inlet is mounted outside or in another accessible location and connects to the generator with a heavy-duty cord. The transfer switch then directs selected generator power to approved building circuits.

Key Takeaways About Generator Inlet

  • The inlet is a building-mounted connection point.
  • It connects a portable generator to a transfer switch.
  • An inlet is not the same as a standard receptacle.

How Generator Inlet Works

A generator inlet receives power from a portable generator through a matching cord and passes that power into the building wiring. The inlet connects to a transfer switch, which controls how selected circuits receive generator power. This arrangement keeps the generator connection outside the building while the switch manages power inside.

The inlet and cord must have matching connection types and electrical ratings. A weather-resistant cover helps protect the connection when the inlet is not in use. During installation, the wiring route, connection points, grounding path, and transfer switch compatibility all need careful inspection. The inlet itself does not select circuits or start the generator. Those functions belong to the generator and the transfer switch.

From the Service Electric team

When we install a portable generator transfer switch, we inspect the inlet location, enclosure, wiring route, and connection compatibility. We also check that the inlet works with the transfer switch and that the selected circuits match the intended generator connection. Our team keeps the connection accessible for operation and inspection.

Generator Inlet in Practice: A Real-World Example

A homeowner may have a generator inlet installed on an exterior wall near the electrical equipment. During an outage, the homeowner connects the portable generator cord to the inlet, then uses the transfer switch to supply selected circuits.
