What Is an Electrical Subpanel?

An electrical subpanel is a secondary panel that receives power from a main electrical panel and distributes it to designated branch circuits. The subpanel contains circuit breakers, busbars, and connections for grounded conductors. It expands circuit organization in a building while remaining supplied and protected by the main panel.

Key Takeaways About Electrical Subpanel

  • A subpanel is supplied by a main panel.
  • Separate breakers serve designated branch circuits.
  • A subpanel does not replace the main service panel.

How Electrical Subpanel Works

An electrical subpanel receives power through a feeder connected to the main electrical panel. The feeder supplies the subpanel busbars, while individual circuit breakers send power to branch circuits. Each branch circuit then serves a defined area, appliance, or group of equipment.

The subpanel keeps circuit connections organized near the loads they serve. A detached garage, workshop, addition, or large remodel may use a subpanel to reduce long branch-circuit runs. The main electrical panel remains the point that supplies and protects the feeder. Proper conductor separation and grounding connections help the subpanel operate as part of the building’s distribution system.

From the Service Electric team

When we assess an electrical subpanel, we trace its feeder back to the main panel and inspect breaker connections, conductor routing, grounding, and neutral separation. We also identify the circuits served by the subpanel before planning an Electrical Panel Upgrade. That review helps us match the panel arrangement to the building’s actual electrical use.

Electrical Subpanel in Practice: A Real-World Example

A homeowner adding a workshop may use an electrical subpanel near the new space to organize lighting, receptacles, and equipment circuits. The main panel supplies the feeder, while breakers in the subpanel control the branch circuits serving the workshop.
