What Is an LED Driver?

An LED Driver is an electronic device that converts incoming electrical power into the controlled voltage or current an LED light needs. The driver helps regulate power so the light operates properly. Some drivers are built into the fixture, while others are installed separately near the light or in an accessible electrical enclosure.

Key Takeaways About LED Driver

  • A driver regulates power for LED lighting.
  • Driver type must match the fixture.
  • An LED driver is not a standard light bulb ballast.

How LED Driver Works

A person wires a white electronic device at a wooden workbench with tools and lighting parts spread around

An LED Driver receives electrical power from the building wiring and changes that power into a form the LED light can use. The driver controls output to support steady operation, and its design depends on whether the fixture needs constant voltage or constant current. The driver also helps the light respond correctly to switching and dimming controls.

Some LED fixtures have a driver inside the housing. Other fixtures connect to a separate driver installed above a ceiling, inside a junction box, or near the lighting equipment. A constant-current driver suits LED arrays that require a controlled current. A constant-voltage driver suits fixtures designed for a set voltage supply, such as certain LED strips. The driver and fixture must be compatible for proper operation.

From the Service Electric team

When we work on LED Lighting Installation, we check the fixture requirements and the available supply wiring before connecting a driver. We also inspect the driver location, connections, and compatibility with any dimmer or control. These checks help us separate a driver issue from a wiring or fixture problem.

LED Driver in Practice: A Real-World Example

A kitchen renovation may use recessed LED fixtures with separate drivers above the ceiling. The installation requires each driver to match the fixture and connect securely to the branch-circuit wiring.
