What Is an AFCI?

AFCI is an Arc-Fault Circuit Interrupter, a circuit-protection device that detects electrical arcing and interrupts power before an arc can damage wiring or ignite nearby materials. An AFCI monitors the electrical pattern on a circuit and responds to irregular changes linked with damaged insulation, loose connections, or other arc-producing conditions.

Key Takeaways About AFCI

  • AFCI protection responds to arcing, not ordinary overloads.
  • AFCI breakers protect circuits from damaged wiring conditions.
  • AFCI is not the same as GFCI protection.

How AFCI Works

AFCI protection monitors the current pattern on a circuit while electrical devices operate. Arcing creates an irregular signature that differs from the steady pattern of normal current. When the device recognizes that pattern, the AFCI opens the circuit and stops power flow.

An AFCI may be built into a circuit breaker or installed as a receptacle. An arc fault can develop when insulation is damaged, a connection loosens, or wiring is pinched. AFCI protection focuses on arcing conditions, while GFCI protection responds to current leaving its intended path. A tripped AFCI can indicate a problem with connected equipment, wiring, or the protective device itself.

From the Service Electric team

When we work on circuit breaker repair, we check whether an AFCI trip follows a repeatable pattern or occurs under a specific load. We inspect the breaker, circuit connections, wiring condition, and connected equipment before deciding whether the issue calls for repair or replacement.

AFCI in Practice: A Real-World Example

A bedroom circuit may trip its AFCI breaker after a cord is pinched behind furniture and the insulation becomes damaged. Circuit breaker repair can include tracing the circuit, correcting the damaged connection or wiring, and testing the protective device.
